Peshawar

Peshawar, a city with a millennia-old history, is renowned as the City of Flowers and serves as a gateway to the Central Asian states. In 1998, its population stood at 982,000, but by 2017, it had surged to 1.9 million – a staggering 101% increase. The water system, originally designed to meet the needs of a much smaller population, is now overwhelmed by the growing demand.

Additionally, an Asian Development Bank (ADB) report reveals that 67% of Peshawar’s water is wasted due to inefficiencies. Recognizing the urgent need for improvement, the Local Government, Elections, and Rural Development Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, has initiated the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project (KPCIP). This project aims to modernize the city’s water supply system to meet current demands and reduce water wastage. Details of the under-construction projects are provided below.
